The wheel and pedals that I use.
I’ve been into motorsports my whole life. I’ve always dreamed of having my own racecar but never had enough money or knowledge to do it. Now I spend a lot of my time getting my racing fix on iRacing.com. iRacing is a highly accurate racing simulator for the PC. This isn’t your typical PlayStation or xBox smash-em-up game. Crashing on purpose on iRacing is a big no-no and grounds for permanent suspension from the service. iRacing is attempting to make online simulated racing an actual branch of motorsports.
The details of the iRacing simulation are incredible. To build tracks they actually laser scan the real track and build a 3D model based on that laser scan data. What this creates is a millimeter accurate digital representation of the real-world race track. Every single bump, dip, crack, tree, building, and wall is modeled in iRacing. The same goes for their cars. iRacing laser scans each car and builds a 3D model from that data. They also measure and weigh many parts of the car in order to more accurately model the physics of each car.
iRacing has even partnered with NASCAR to make an officially sanctioned, virtual division of NASCAR starting in January of 2010.
iRacing is so accurate that even real pros are using it for training and even for fun. I’ve been able to race with NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. many times over the past few years. Yes, the real Dale Jr. Not the 12 year old kid sitting on his couch with his PlayStation controller version.
How cool is that?
